With interviews by dozens of guests, from artists to museum directors, philanthropists to politicians, hosts Charlotte Burns and Allan Schwartzman— whose prior podcast, In Other Words set the the standard for incisive arts discussions— lead us through provocative and thoughtful conversations about the future of the art world, asking who wields the power—and why.

Transcript:

Hamza Walker:
This is a fight and it's not going to happen without one, obviously. Blood has been spilled and so the impetus for change—people don't just give up power.

Charlotte Burns:
This is Hope and Dread. I'm Charlotte Burns

Allan Schwartzman:
And I’m Allan Schwartzman.
This is a series about the tectonic shifts in power in art.

Charlotte Burns:
We’re going to meet people who are making change, and the people who are resisting change.

And we’ll ask: who’s driving the wagon and who’s trying to seize the reins? And, do you need to buckle up to ride out this journey?

Amy Webb:
What's happened over the past 10 years is nothing compared to what will be happening over the next 10 years. Anybody who feels as though they have had technology induced whiplash should make an appointment with a physical therapist. Get that neck strong because the whiplash that's coming next is going to complicate matters for you.

Allan Schwartzman:
We plotted the boundless growth of the art world in our earlier podcast series, In Other Words.

Charlotte Burns:
In this series, we’ll ask if Growth and Progress go happily hand in hand — or if they’re another couple that split up and had to sell their collection.

Because...over the past several years, we've seen an ever increasing series of clashes over power and culture taking place at every level.

NEWS CLIPS OF CLASHES AT PROTESTS

Charlotte Burns:
We’ll be talking to dozens of people—from artists to astrologers, museum directors and curators, to philanthropists and futurists--to get a handle on where we are, how we got here and where we’re going. And - vitally - if we can move through feelings of dread to hope.

Michael Armitage:
You can't create change by yourself. I mean, you can try, but good luck to you.

Roxane Gay:
The more risky it feels, the more necessary it is to use your voice because there's so much at stake. I think that's why we see so many people with different kinds of privilege who are terrified and worried about being canceled. It's because they know how they treat others and they don't want that happening to them.

Charlotte Burns:
These are tough conversations about who holds the power in art now and why.

Deana Haggag:
The money's just a tool, and artists, communities, organizations have other tools. And we're all trying to hopefully come together to shift the thing forward. Giving up power and authority is really terrifying. And for a long time, money was the way that people had that power.

Charlotte Burns:
What you hear may surprise you...

Lord Ed Vaizey:
I think I would support the return of the Elgin Marbles now and I think I was probably wrong.

Allan Schwartzman:
Culture is being reshaped in real time.

Kelli Morgan:
The reconfiguration of the field is not going to be pretty and it's not going to be short.

Miki Garcia:
Many people don't want to do the work because the system that is built right now does benefit certain people. And think that change produces dread and discomfort.

Allan Schwartzman:
We will be moving through the dread to the hope.

Sarah Arison:
I have hope that these conversations will continue to move forward and that people will continue to be engaged. These conversations will be productive and about building people and missions up instead of tearing them down.
